CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

CON

My phone beeped from where it lay on the corner of my desk and my eyes skimmed the screen. Seeing Clay’s name, I immediately snatched it up and swiped the screen to answer before I could draw a full breath.

“Yeah?” Was Grace okay? What if something had happened to her? I swore—

“Think I’ve got something for you,” Clay spoke without preamble. “May have found our photographer.”

My worry quickly morphed into anger, and fury simmered in my veins. “Where are you?”

“At the coffee shop. Grace met up with a friend and guess who showed up.”

It said a lot that I was more than a little preoccupied wondering just who the friend was, and whether the person was male or female. I forced myself to focus on the more important information. “Who is it?”

“Not sure,” Clay responded. “Male. Mid-thirties. Trim build, brown hair. But he looks familiar. I think I saw him last time we were downtown.”

I didn't believe in coincidence. “Tail him. Find out who he is, where he lives, everything you can. I'll cover Grace.”

“I'm sure you will.”

I could hear the teasing in his smart ass remark. “Go fuck yourself.”

Clay just laughed. “No need—”

“So help me God…” I growled, cutting him off. “If you say something about my sister, I will murder you.”

The asshole just laughed louder, and I gritted my teeth. “Cover her ‘til she leaves. Dick.”

He was still laughing when I disconnected a second later and shot off a quick message to Grace.

Coming to see me tonight?

My knee jiggled nervously beneath my desk as I anxiously waited for her response.

A sense of calm descended over me when it came less than ten seconds later. Of course.

With those two words, it was as if a dam inside me had broken. I shoved my chair back and stood, swiping the files off my desk and shoving them into my backpack in one movement. I snatched up my keys and phone, debating whether to pick up Chinese or Italian as I left my office. At the last minute, I grabbed the blueprints for the new house, a nervous anticipation bubbling in my veins.

We hadn’t discussed much over the weekend, choosing to keep the topics light and carefree. But now I couldn’t wait to tell her all about it, show her everything we’d talked about all those years ago. I wondered what it would be like to have her there with me permanently. I didn’t want to scare her off, so I’d kept my mouth shut. Soon enough, though, it was a topic I planned to broach with her. Because now that she was back in my life, I didn’t want to be away from her for a single day.
